Field notes

What to look for

A stocky brown marmot with a yellow belly, a pale muzzle and a bushy tail; sunbathes on rocks.

Where

Rock outcrops and talus in the southern Rockies and foothills, such as Waterton and the Crowsnest Pass.

When

Tips

Browner and lower-elevation than the hoary marmot; woodchucks are plainer and live in the parkland and boreal.
