Field notes

What to look for

A stout, grey-brown burrower with tiny eyes, big front claws and external cheek pouches. Rarely seen above ground.

Where

Grassland, pastures, hayfields and gardens across the prairie and parkland.

When

Year-round; the fan-shaped soil mounds without an open hole are its sign.

Tips

Not the prairie 'gopher' (that's a ground squirrel). Mounds with no visible entrance mean pocket gopher.
