Field notes

What to look for

A small round-eared relative of rabbits, grey-brown and tailless, sitting on a rock and calling 'eeenk'.

Where

Talus slopes and boulder fields above treeline in the Rockies; Jasper, Banff and Kananaskis passes.

When

June to September; active all winter under the snow but not seen.

Tips

Listen for the sharp call, then look for a small shape on a boulder. Hay piles between rocks are its winter store.
