Field notes
What to look for
A small, rusty-red squirrel with a white belly, a white eye ring and a bushy tail; scolds loudly from a branch.
Where
Coniferous and mixed forest everywhere north and west of the prairie, including conifers in cities.
When
Year-round; noisy chattering at dawn, cone middens under spruces.
Tips
Smaller and redder than any other Alberta squirrel; the chatter and 'churr' calls are unmistakable. No grey squirrels are native here.
