Field notes
What to look for
A slow, hunched, grey-brown rodent covered in pale-tipped quills, with a small face and a thick spiny tail. Cat-sized, 5 to 12 kg.
Where
Forests and parkland throughout Alberta; often found up a tree or waddling along a road at night.
When
Year-round; most often seen in winter when bark-chewed trees and its meandering trough of a trail give it away.
Tips
Nothing else looks like it. Keep dogs away; the quills are barbed.
