Field notes

What to look for

A huge shaggy bovine with a massive shoulder hump, dark brown coat, short curved horns and a beard. Bulls can top 900 kg.

Where

Elk Island National Park (plains bison north of the highway, wood bison south) and Wood Buffalo National Park in the far north.

When

Year-round; calves are orange-red in May and June.

Tips

Unmistakable. Wood bison are taller with a squarer hump. Keep 100 m away; they are faster than they look.
