Field notes
What to look for
A large bear with a distinct shoulder hump, a dished facial profile, small rounded ears and long pale claws. Fur ranges from blond to dark brown, often grizzled with silver tips.
Where
Mountain valleys and foothills, and the boreal forest of the northwest; roadside meadows in Banff, Jasper and Kananaskis in early summer.
When
April to November. Spring on avalanche slopes and roadsides, autumn on berry slopes.
Tips
The hump and the concave face are the giveaways, not colour or size. Carry bear spray in grizzly country and never approach.
