Field notes

What to look for

A grey-brown wild sheep with a white muzzle, white rump and belly, and a short tail. Rams carry massive curled horns; ewes have short curved spikes. About 1 m at the shoulder.

Where

Steep grassy slopes and cliffs in the mountains and foothills; roadside herds near Canmore, Kananaskis, Jasper and along Highway 40.

When

Year-round; rams clash in the November rut, and herds descend to roads and low slopes in winter.

Tips

Mountain goats are pure white with black horns; sheep are brown with a white rump. Alberta's provincial mammal.
