Field notes

What to look for

A stocky grey-brown deer with oversized ears, a white rump and a thin white tail tipped in black. Bucks have antlers that fork and fork again. Slightly larger than a white-tail.

Where

Coulees, badlands, foothills and mountain slopes; also aspen parkland and prairie river breaks.

When

Year-round; in winter they gather on south-facing slopes.

Tips

When alarmed they 'stot', bouncing on all four legs at once. The black-tipped tail and mule ears separate them from white-tails even at a distance.
