Field notes
What to look for
A bear-like weasel with a dark brown coat, pale bands along the flanks, a bushy tail and a broad head. Powerfully built, about 10 to 18 kg.
Where
Remote mountain and boreal wilderness; Alberta's population is small and thinly spread.
When
Year-round, active at any hour. Almost all records are tracks in snow or trail cameras.
Tips
Bigger and heavier than a marten, with the pale side stripes. A live sighting is one of the rarest in the province.
