Field notes

What to look for

A cat-sized tree weasel with a golden-brown coat, a pale orange throat patch, a bushy tail and large rounded ears.

Where

Old coniferous forest in the mountains, foothills and boreal north; sometimes around backcountry cabins.

When

Year-round; bold and curious, often seen bounding across a trail or investigating a campsite.

Tips

The orange bib and bushier tail separate it from a mink, which is darker, sleeker and near water. Fishers are much bigger and darker.
