Field notes
What to look for
A long-legged grey cat with huge furry feet, black ear tufts, a short black-tipped tail and a facial ruff. Looks bigger than it is: 8 to 14 kg.
Where
Dense boreal and mountain forest with snowshoe hares; populations rise and fall with the hare cycle.
When
Year-round, mostly at dawn, dusk and night; occasionally seen crossing a forest road.
Tips
The completely black tail tip and enormous feet separate it from a bobcat, which is spotted, has a barred tail with a white underside and lives in the south.
