Field notes
What to look for
A slim prairie hawk with long pointed wings, a dark chest bib and pale belly (typical form); two-toned underwing in flight.
Where
Open prairie and parkland; often on fence posts or following tractors.
When
April to September; migrates to Argentina.
Tips
Dark flight feathers with pale wing linings, the reverse of a red-tail. Wings held in a shallow V when soaring.
