What to look for
A dainty falcon with a rusty back and tail and blue-grey wings (male), and two black face stripes; hovers over grass.
Where
Prairie, parkland and roadsides; nests in tree holes and boxes.
When
April to October.
Tips
The smallest falcon, often on wires bobbing its tail. Merlins are darker and stockier and don't hover.
