What to look for
A large chunky hawk, usually with a rusty tail and a dark belly band; colours vary from pale to nearly black.
Where
Fields, roadsides, river valleys and forest edges everywhere; perches on poles.
When
March to November; a few winter in the south.
Tips
The commonest big hawk on a pole. Swainson's is slimmer with pointed wings and a dark chest bib.
