What to look for
A tall grey-blue heron with a long neck, a yellow dagger bill and black head plumes; flies with neck folded and legs trailing.
Where
River edges, marshes and lakeshores across the province; nests in treetop colonies.
When
April to October.
Tips
Sandhill cranes fly with the neck straight out and have a red crown. Herons hunt alone, stock-still.
