Field notes

What to look for

Alberta's biggest bird: a huge all-white swan with a straight black bill and a long neck held upright.

Where

Boreal and foothill lakes and beaver ponds; the Grande Prairie area is a stronghold.

When

April to October; some winter on open rivers in the foothills.

Tips

Tundra swans usually show a yellow spot before the eye and have a bugling call; trumpeters honk like a French horn.
