What to look for
A chunky, long-billed brown shorebird with striped head and back; flushes in a zig-zag with a rasping call.
Where
Wet meadows, bog edges and ditches everywhere.
When
April to October. The 'winnowing' sound of its tail feathers in display flight at dusk.
Tips
The extremely long straight bill and cryptic stripes. Usually seen only when flushed.
