What to look for
A long, elegant black-and-white grebe with a swan-like neck, red eyes and a slender yellow-green bill.
Where
Big prairie and parkland lakes with open water; colonies at places like Cold Lake and Lake Newell.
When
May to September; pairs 'rush' side by side across the water in courtship.
Tips
Black cap extends below the eye. Slimmer and longer than any duck; loons have a dagger bill and dark neck.
