Field notes
What to look for
A tiny olive bird with a broken white eye ring, wing bars and a red crown patch the male flashes when excited; flicks its wings constantly.
Where
Spruce forests in the mountains, foothills and boreal north; everywhere on migration.
When
April to October.
Tips
The loud, rich song is huge for the bird's size. Golden-crowned kinglets have a striped face.
