Field notes

What to look for

A small round toad with vertical cat-like pupils, a bump between the eyes and a black 'spade' on each hind foot for digging.

Where

Sandy prairie in the south; spends most of its life underground.

When

May to July, only after heavy rain; a loud snoring chorus from temporary pools.

Tips

Vertical pupils separate it from the true toads. Emerges only briefly, so time it with rain.
