Field notes
What to look for
A slim dark salamander with a yellow or green stripe down the back and long toes on the hind feet; about 10 cm.
Where
Mountain and foothill ponds and damp forest in the Rockies, from Waterton to Jasper.
When
April to September; found under logs and rocks near water.
Tips
The bright back stripe. Tiger salamanders are much larger and blotched, and live on the prairie.
