Field notes

What to look for

A small glossy brown bat with a wingspan of about 25 cm, fluttering erratically over water at dusk.

Where

Roosts in attics, bat houses and hollow trees across the province; forages over lakes and rivers.

When

May to September; hibernates in caves and mines.

Tips

The commonest small bat, badly hit by white-nose syndrome. Big brown bats are noticeably larger with slower wingbeats.
