Field notes

What to look for

A small slate-blue duck with rusty flanks and bold white stripes and spots; hens are brown with white face spots.

Where

Fast, rocky mountain rivers such as the Bow and Maligne in the Rockies.

When

May to August on rivers; winters on the Pacific coast.

Tips

Bobs among rapids where no other duck goes. Hens resemble a small scoter but with the white face spots.
