Field notes

What to look for

A tiny buff-grey fox the size of a house cat, with large ears, black patches beside the nose and a black-tipped tail. Around 2 kg.

Where

Open shortgrass prairie in the far southeast, near the Saskatchewan border; reintroduced after being lost from Alberta.

When

Year-round but strictly nocturnal; most often seen in headlights or at den sites at dusk.

Tips

Far smaller than a red fox and never rusty. The black tail tip (not white) and the black muzzle patches confirm it.
