What to look for

A pale, speckled prairie grouse with a pointed tail and feathered legs; males stamp and coo on leks in spring.

Where

Native grassland and parkland edges; leks (dancing grounds) are traditional sites.

When

Year-round; lek displays April to early May at dawn.

Tips

Pointed tail with white outer feathers. Partridges are smaller with an orange face; pheasants have long tails.
