Field notes

What to look for

A slim brown-and-white plover with two black breast bands, a rusty rump and a loud 'kill-deer' cry.

Where

Gravel lots, fields, shorelines and golf courses everywhere.

When

March to October.

Tips

Two bands (a semipalmated plover has one). Fakes a broken wing to lure you from its nest.
