What to look for
A dark garter snake with a yellow back stripe and red bars along the sides; up to 1 m.
Where
Parkland, boreal and prairie wetlands and edges; huge winter dens in the northeast.
When
April to October; mass emergence from dens in late April.
Tips
The red side bars. Plains garter snake has orange back stripe and black spots; wandering garter snake is duller with a greyish stripe.
