What to look for
A grosbeak with an orange breast and collar, a black head and a big grey bill; females streaky with a striped head.
Where
River cottonwoods and coulees in the far south.
When
May to August.
Tips
Orange, not red, on the breast. Western tanager has a small bill and no head stripes.
